With the Pinhole Impressions series, Paul has gone back to the most basic form of photography using a pinhole camera, which relies on pure instinct as there is no viewfinder. This means the photographs are spontaneous and almost uncomposed. Using long exposures, he examines movement and the passage of time in his subjects. The resulting colour and monochrome landscape images have a beautiful ethereal appearance, but at the same time are are dark and sombre. The lack of a lens means there is a softness which resembles some 19th century work, but the images are from a very much contemporary viewpoint.
